Given the escalating threats in Ukraine, now is the time for leaders and healthcare workers around the globe to prepare for the physical and mental health care needs in a radiological disaster. The study of radiological and other disasters reveals the essential elements to protect mental health—enhancing a sense of safety, calming, social connectedness, self- and community efficacy, and hope. Healthcare system support for community mental health can foster these elements through actions that prioritize three areas: health education, risk communication, and early interventions.
